22. Choking in the Unconscious Infant
Call for help. If someone responds, have them call 911. Place infant on firm surface. Begin CPR. Look to see if object is visible. Turn infant’s head to the side, and use index finger to sweep the object out of mouth. NEVER perform blind finger sweep, as this may force object further into airway. After 5 cycles of compressions and ventilations, activate EMS if not already done. If obstruction is relieved, check responsiveness, breathing, and pulse.
