21. Choking in the Unconscious Adult or Child

  1. Lower the victim gently to the ground. Call 911. Begin CPR. Do not check for pulse. Check for object in mouth. If you can see it, turn head to side and sweep it out with index finger. NEVER perform blind finger sweep, as this may push object further into airway. 
  1. Attempt to provide breaths. If breaths will not go in, resume chest compressions. After 5 cycles of compressions and ventilations, activate EMS if not already done.If obstruction is relieved, check for responsiveness, breathing, and pulse.
