13. One Rescuer CPR for Children (Aged 1 year to puberty)

A. Check responsiveness. Check breathing. Call for help. If someone answers a call for help, send them to call EMS and get AED. If you witnessed the arrest, leave the child to call EMS and get an AED.

B.  Check pulse for 5 seconds, but no more than 10 seconds. May need to check femoral pulse, as carotid may be difficult if child is younger. If you cannot feel pulse, or heart rate is below 60, begin CPR with 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths. Use face mask or bag-valve-mask if available. Use head tilt, chin lift method. Each breath should go in over 1 second. Should see chest rise.

C. After 2 minutes of compressions, leave the child to call 911 and get AED if possible. Use AED asap.
